You're screwed. To become Thane you have to buy the house, then talk to the Jarl and she'll make you thane. But if you enter the house BEFORE talking to the Jarl the dialogue disappears and you can never become Thane of Riften. Obviously it's a glitch. That is exactly what was supposed to be fixed by patch 1.4, but the TC is still stuck. The jarl requires you to buy the house in town as well as completing a number of miscellaneous quests. Once this is achieved you can become Thane. In order to receive this quest you must first aid the current jarl, Laila Law-Giver or Maven Black-Briar, by dealing with the skooma trade in Riften. This wouldn't be a big deal, I don't exactly care about becoming the Thane of Riften, however, this bug also prevents me from buying Honeyside and as this was the intended home for my character, I'm really bummed out. ...
