Hex mage is really fun. For breakthrough skills i recommend getting the cabal hermit, since you wanna be doing alot of elemental damage boosting all your boons is very strong. The third breakthrough is less obvious, i went with philosopher for a chakram build. For gear, you want the rainbow hex enchant on your weapon.
